With just over two weeks until the Michael Sobell Hospice Charity (MSHC) 40-mile On Your Bike cycle challenge, over 100 cyclists are already gearing up to put their pedal power to the test in support of the Hospice which provides palliative care to local people and their families across Hillingdon, Buckinghamshire and parts of Hertfordshire.
The challenge, taking place on Sunday 20th May, will see hardy riders (no doubt in a fair amount of Lycra), setting off from the Northwood-based Hospice based at Mount Vernon Hospital, towards a number of picturesque areas including Denham, The Chalfonts, Chesham, Bovingdon and Chipperfield, with a well-deserved water stop at the Boot Tavern for that all-important energy-boost!
Dave Newton, of West Drayton, who has taken on the challenge every year since 2012, commented: “Michael Sobell Hospice looked after all our family while my Mum (Marilyn Newton) had cancer. Not only was it the care they gave to my Mum while she was ill but also the care they gave to the entire the family. It’s not only the patients they support, but families too.”
He added: “I’m just doing my bit to say thank you to all the staff and help them carry on their fantastic work.”
Entry is £30pp (£35 on the day) for adults and £10 for children aged 11-16 (must be accompanied by an adult). You can register online via the MSHC website by clicking here or pop into the fundraising office, located next door to the Hospice and pick up a registration form.
MSHC fundraising spokesperson Ophelia Chambers-Henry said: “This event is really popular with cyclists, cycling groups and those who are up for a bit more of a cycling challenge on a Sunday morning! Some of our entrants even use it as a warm-up to bigger cycling events like the RideLondon-Surrey 100. There’s still time to sign up and be part of this amazing challenge, and in turn help raise vital funds for our Hospice.”
